How AMOLED black works
LCD screens have a backlight that shines through every pixel, so black is really dark gray. On AMOLED and OLED screens, each pixel makes its own light — and a black pixel simply switches off. That gives you true black, infinite contrast, and colors that seem to float on the screen.
How much battery a black wallpaper saves
The more of the screen that’s black, and the brighter your screen setting, the more you save. A wallpaper alone makes a modest difference because apps cover it most of the time. The saving adds up when you:
- Combine a black wallpaper with Dark theme across the system.
- Show your wallpaper on the Always On Display, where it’s visible for hours.
- Spend a lot of time on the Home and Lock screens.
On LCD screens there’s no saving at all, but a dark wallpaper still looks good.
How to pick a great dark wallpaper
- Look for true black, not dark gray. Only pure black pixels (#000000) switch off completely.
- Choose a small, bright subject. A glowing planet, a neon line, or a single flower on black looks striking and keeps most pixels off.
- Use high resolution. Small bright details on black show compression artifacts and banding, so 4K or 8K images stay cleaner.
- Avoid static bright areas on the AOD. If your wallpaper shows on the Always On Display, keep bright parts small.
Get the most out of it
- Turn on Dark theme — on Pixel in Settings → Display, on Samsung in Settings → Display → Dark.
- On Samsung, check the option to apply Dark mode to the wallpaper in Wallpaper and style, which dims bright wallpapers at night.
- Set the same black wallpaper on the Lock and Home screens for a seamless look when you unlock.
Dark wallpaper ideas
- Dark mode wallpapers — made for black themes.
- Space — stars and planets on deep black.
- Minimalist — a single shape or line.
- Gothic and cyberpunk — moody, neon-lit scenes.
ON Lock Screen for Android has thousands of dark wallpapers in 4K and 8K, so fine details on black stay crisp.
Frequently asked questions
Do black wallpapers really save battery?
On AMOLED and OLED screens, yes — black pixels are switched off and use no power. The saving is noticeable with a pure black wallpaper plus Dark theme, and small with a wallpaper that is only partly dark.
Does my phone have an AMOLED screen?
Almost every Samsung Galaxy S, Z, and most A models, every recent Pixel, and most flagship phones from other brands use OLED or AMOLED screens. Check your phone’s specifications to be sure.
Do black wallpapers save battery on LCD screens?
No. LCD screens light every pixel with the same backlight, so a black wallpaper uses the same power as any other.
Can a black wallpaper cause burn-in?
No. Burn-in comes from bright elements that stay in the same place for a long time. Black pixels are off, so they can’t burn in.
