Why Android crops your wallpaper
Most phone screens are about 9:20 — tall and narrow. A photo from your camera is usually 3:4 or 9:16, and a desktop wallpaper is 16:9. When the shapes don’t match, Android scales the image until it fills the screen and cuts off whatever sticks out.
There are three common symptoms:
- Cropped: the sides or top of the image are missing.
- Zoomed in: the image looks larger than it should, usually on the Home screen.
- Blurry: the image doesn’t have enough pixels for your display.
Wallpaper sizes for popular Android phones
Use an image at least as large as your screen, in portrait orientation. These are the native resolutions of some popular recent models:
| Phone | Resolution (pixels) |
|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy S25 | 1080 × 2340 |
| Samsung Galaxy S25+ / S25 Ultra | 1440 × 3120 |
| Google Pixel 10 | 1080 × 2424 |
| Google Pixel 10 Pro | 1280 × 2856 |
| Google Pixel 10 Pro XL | 1344 × 2992 |
| Galaxy Z Fold7 (main / cover) | 1968 × 2184 / 1080 × 2520 |
| Galaxy Z Flip7 (main) | 1080 × 2520 |
Newer models use similar sizes. If your phone isn’t listed, look in Settings → Display → Screen resolution (Samsung and Pixel Pro models), or simply use a 4K or 8K portrait wallpaper, which is larger than every phone screen on the market.
Fix a cropped wallpaper
- Start with a portrait image. Wallpapers made for phones — like those in our wallpaper library — already have the right shape.
- Reposition before you save. In the wallpaper preview, pinch and drag to choose which part of the image stays visible.
- Crop it yourself first. In Google Photos or Gallery, tap Edit → Crop, choose a free or 9:16 ratio, keep the part you want, and set the edited copy as your wallpaper.
- Use a landscape photo on the Home screen only. Wide images work better behind icons, where some launchers scroll across them.
Fix a wallpaper that’s zoomed in on the Home screen
Some launchers move the wallpaper sideways as you swipe between Home screen pages. To make room for that motion, they zoom the image in.
- Third-party launchers such as Nova or Lawnchair: look for a Wallpaper scrolling option in the launcher’s Home screen settings and turn it off.
- Samsung: if your wallpaper looks zoomed only when it moves, turn off motion effects for the wallpaper where available, and check Settings → Accessibility → Visibility enhancements → Reduce animations.
- Any phone: reset the wallpaper and choose Home screen only, adjusting the crop in the preview.
Fix a blurry wallpaper
- Use the original file. Screenshots and images sent through WhatsApp, Messenger, or social media are compressed.
- Check the resolution. The image should be at least as tall as your screen in pixels — see the table above.
- Download higher resolution. 8K wallpapers are four times the pixels of 4K, so they stay crisp even after cropping or zooming. ON Lock Screen for Android offers 4K and 8K versions of its wallpapers.
- On Samsung, check your screen resolution. Galaxy phones often run at FHD+ by default to save battery. Switching to WQHD+ in Settings → Display → Screen resolution makes sharp wallpapers look even sharper.
Foldables: Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip
Foldables have two screens with different shapes. The Fold’s main screen is almost square, while its cover screen is tall and narrow, so one image rarely fits both.
- Open Settings → Wallpaper and style → Change wallpapers.
- Pick an image and choose whether it’s for the main screen or the cover screen.
- Use a square-ish image with a centered subject for the Fold’s main screen, and a tall portrait wallpaper for the cover screen.
On the Flip’s small cover screen, simple, high-contrast images like minimalist or pattern wallpapers work best.
Frequently asked questions
What size should an Android wallpaper be?
Match your screen’s aspect ratio, which is about 9:20 on most phones, and use at least your screen’s resolution — for example 1440 × 3120 pixels for a Galaxy Ultra. A 4K or 8K portrait wallpaper covers every current phone.
Why is my wallpaper zoomed in on the Home screen?
Some launchers scroll the wallpaper sideways as you swipe between Home screen pages, so they zoom it to make room. Turn off wallpaper scrolling in your launcher settings, or use an image that is wider than your screen.
Why does my wallpaper look blurry on Samsung?
The image is smaller than your screen, or it was compressed when you sent it through a messaging app. Download the original, full-resolution file instead of a screenshot or a forwarded copy.
How do I set a wallpaper on a Galaxy Z Fold or Flip?
Foldables have two displays with very different shapes. In Wallpaper and style, set the main screen and the cover screen separately, and pick an image for each that fits its shape.
